Community Response on COVID-19 at a Glance - Ukhrul

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

In times of global COVID-19 pandemic, a beautiful story of unparalleled humanity emerges from Ukhrul, Manipur.

Rarely would one see such big-heartedness and such selfless acts. The folks from the hills of Ukhrul walked from their homes, leaving behind their work, risking their health and life, to give others whatever little they have, to serve and save humanity during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The people of Ukhrul lead and show the way how a community can contribute, and join hands with the government, to put up a collective fight against the prevention and spread of the deadly virus.

Various groups of people from different nooks and crannies of the hills came out with financial, physical, material and moral support to join the global fight against the pandemic. The campaign from their end had begun, even before the cases of Corona Virus reared its head in the hills of Manipur.

A glaring example is the formation of Tangkhul Coordination Forum for COVID-19 (TCFC), under the umbrella of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) — a common platform constituted with members of the District Administration, Autonomous District Council, Medical Fraternity, Police Force, Faith Based Organization (FBOs), Civil Society Organizations CSOs), among others, on 21 March 2020.

The TCFC engages in extending all forms of possible support to the community and government departments. Some of the key responsibilities include mass field mobilization to Tangkhul villages for preparedness, publication of booklet (local dialect) on COVID-19, enforcing 28 days (14+14) of quarantine for all returnees of Tangkhul community and introducing Village Quarantine Centre (VQC) at the village level, mobilization of COVID-19 relief corpus fund within the community, financial assistance to deserving people staying outside the State and volunteers on doing their assigned duties around-the-clock, formation of TCFC chapter in Imphal and coordination with other cities, identification and management of IQCs/CQCs, initiation of inducting 16 nurses in Ukhrul and Kamjong and converting one IQC into COVID Care Centre for asymptomatic patients.

The TCFC coordinates and holds regular consultation with district medical team, district administration and legislators of three Assembly Constituencies, namely, the 43-Phungyar, 44-Ukhrul and 45-Chingai, which spread across the districts of Ukhrul and Kamjong in combating the COVID-19 in the state of Manipur.

The narrative of voluntary services and selfless contribution towards combating the COVID-19 comes along with a story of challenges. There is a slew of issues relating the COVID-19 right from public awareness to the management of QCs, shortages of medical personnel to lack of massive infrastructural deficit, overload of duties for the MLAs and community in managing the QCs due to untimely release of fund. On top of this, huge number of returnees and to settle the issues of delay in swab test result— all these factors pose a herculean task for the district administration, medical practitioners and community volunteers.

The story will continue so long as the virus lives amongst us. Until then, to grow in wisdom, strengths and have a solid foundation, lest we should be reminded of a line from the scripture, 1 Peter 4:10 “As each of you received gifts, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace”.
