IWSC, Khumbong’s Response to Covid-19
At the very outset, let me take this opportunity to introduce our Club. Established on 27 May 1964 by a team of educationists and students of Khumbong, Imphal West Students’ Club (IWSC), Khumbong, Imphal West, Manipur, one of the oldest Clubs in Imphal West district, Manipur. It is registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The priorities of our Club are to uplift and promote education, health, environment and sports in our locality. We have taken up different activities in these areas from time to time.
With the outbreak of pandemic COVID-19 across the globe, the routine activities of our club were halted and we decided to respond to the global health crisis by carrying out different activities in our locality with our limited resources.
Appeal video to raise awareness:
Manipur government announced the first total lockdown all over the state from 23 till 31 March 2020 with the strict orders to stay at home. During this period of lockdown, we made an appeal video directing the local community to stay at home and to follow the orders issued by the State government. The video featuring some renowned faces of our locality and neighbouring villages were widely circulated among the youths and alike of our locality and beyond through different social media platforms to raise awareness on the importance of staying home and following SOPs to combat COVID-19.
Distribution of food items 31 March 2020
IWSC, with the sponsorship of Dr. Yaikhomba Taorem, Consultant Pediatrics, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol who is also a member of the Club, distributed daily used food items to 60 families of Khumbong giving priorities to widows and daily bread earners. The initiative was taken well ahead of the distribution of rice and other items by the Government.
Distribution of masks to vegetable vendors and police
We distributed around 50 face mask to vegetable vendors, shopkeepers and police personnel on duty at Khumbong on 1 April 2020. Availability of such masks in the market was very difficult during that period. However, Dr. Yaikhomba Taorem, Consultant Pediatrics, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol took all troubles to make them available to the Club for free distribution.
Active participation in the distribution of grocery items by local MLA on 9 April 2020
Members of our Club actively involved in the free distribution of grocery items provided by Government through Dr. Sapam Ranjan, Hon’ble MLA, Konthoujam Assembly constituency on 10 April 2020 at two venues of our locality. We helped in the maintenance of strict social distancing and identification of household, etc.
Distribution of vegetables and fruits on April 21, 2020
Our Club distributed vegetables and other fruit items to the residents of Khumbong and its surrounding villages at Khumbong Keithel. The vegetables and fruits items were handed over to IWSC, Khumbong by a Relief Team led by Pousinlung, Pastor of Longmai -2 (Noney) Baptist Church for free public distribution in the backdrop of hardships faced by the public due to the ongoing lockdown and curfew. All the distributed items were sourced from Longmai and its surrounding hills.
Pousinlung, Pastor of the above mentioned Church, while handing over the food items said that the items were not adequate in quantity but it was a token of love and bonding between hill and valley during this difficult time. Oinam Samarendra, President of IWSC, Khumbong appreciated the gesture shown by the Longmai Baptist Church towards the people of Khumbong and emphasized to lend helping hand between hills and valley people during such trouble times.
Distribution of grocery items, sanitisers and masks on 24 April 2020 at Longmai-2
Our Club provided some essential food items, sanitisers and masks to the authority of Longmai - 2 Baptist Church, Noney district for free distribution to the villagers on 24 April 2020. The distributed materials were sponsored by our Club members namely Khangembam Sanatomba, Dr. Kolom Rabi and Taorem Jeeban Khuman, all from Khumbong.
Setting up and management of Community Quarantine Centre at JNV, Khumbong
We were involved in the setting up and management of Community Quarantine Centre at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Khumbong. We provided our suggestions to the establishment of the Centre during the pre-opening meeting called by the local MLA and attended by the district administration, police, medical and volunteers. The Centre was formally opened on May May 2020 with the arrival of returnees of Konthoujam AC from different parts of the country after having referred by respective institutional Quarantine Centres.
Saving the lives of cattle during the lockdown on 12 May 2020
Our Club in association with Veterinary Hospital, Khumbong conducted a vaccination programme of cattle at the ground of the club. The vaccination was conducted to save the lives of cattle from the dreaded diseases of cattle namely Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) and Black Quarter (BQ). IWSC took this initiative during this lockdown period in view of reported deaths of cattle from these diseases in neighbouring villages. Around 80 cattle including calves were vaccinated during the programme.
Exchange of edibles and distribution
Our Club exchanged edibles with the Village authority of Keikao, Tamenglong and IWSC, Khumbong on 13 May 2020. Those items received by the Club from Keikao were distributed to villagers, migrant workers and management of JNV Quarantine Centre, police and staff of JNV Khumbong on the following day.
Capacity building programme for Club members
Club members interacted with the volunteers of Indian Red Cross Society, Imphal for capacity building to spread awareness through distribution of leaflets to the shopkeepers and vegetable vendors at Khumbong Bazar on 15 May 2020.
Apart from the resources available to us, Secretary of the Club Shri Atom Samarendra Singh who is also a member of the COVID outreach programme of IBSD, Takyelpat brought the activity of the institute by distributing drinking water, hand sanitisers and face shields.
These are the highlight of some of the responses we had provided in combating the global health crisis at the local level. We would like to salute to all the frontline workers and authorities of the Government who are involved in tackling this pandemic disease. Thank you. Stay safe.
