The Role of Volunteers from Various Organisations in Response To Covid-19 Pandemic - Imphal West

Imphal West District recorded the 1st COVID-19 positive case in Manipur on 24 March 2020 (Vimi Ningombam of Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai). Therefore it was critical to ensure awareness about COVID-19 and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) or guidelines to reach the general public, covering every locality as soon as possible to control the crisis in the district.

On the occasion of Kang (Rath Yatra), 23 June 2020, Oja Sanouton Vice President of TUC along with TUC members and volunteers making lunch for the inmates.

Furthermore, it was a necessity to arrange Quarantine Centres for the incoming Manipuris from outside the state and for that, a large number of human resources were needed apart from the front line workers (healthcare workers & police staff).

Lunch prepared from the food items donated by Dr. Ch. Nandakishore being provided to inmates.

Dr. Ch. Nandakishore of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai, Joint Director (Planning), Directorate of Vety. & A. H. Services, Manipur, donated 50 kg of chicken, 10 cases of packaged water bottles, 1 box of apples and vegetables - cabbages and chives (Maroi Nakupi) to TUC at DMC CQC.

Namthalong Youth Club donated Rs. 2000 and 3 boxes of eggs to TUC at DMC CQC on 30 May 2020.

PHYLO Club donated Rs.10,000 and 10 kg of chicken to TUC at DMC CQC on 30 May 2020.

Thangmeiband United Club (TUC) donating blood on Voluntary Blood Donation Camp organised by TUC at RIMS on 30 May 2020.

Stress-free program organised by TUC at DMC CQC on 07 June 2020. Popular Manipuri actors, Kaiku and Gokul were also present at the program.

On 27 May 2020, the Indian Redcross Society, Imphal West donated 6 cases of packaged water bottles, 24 pieces of face masks, 1 box of Britannia cake.

Salai Mapari Singpul Lup (SMSL) donated 40 cases of packaged water bottles, 50 kg of sugar and 5 packages of 250 gms of tea leaves.

Many social organizations including Community Clubs, NGOs, CSOs, Meira Paibis, Church and individuals volunteered and supported the state government, the Imphal West DC in particular, in coping with the COVID-19 crisis. They extended their help in managing the Quarantine Centres; providing awareness, relief materials, funds/monetary assistance, food items and even carrying out social services.

Hon’ble Chairperson, Dr. M. Binota and staff of Manipur State Commission for Women donated sanitary napkins to female inmates on 24 May 2020.

Nahahoral Leishemba Club (NLC), Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai donated Rs.50,000, 200 pieces of face masks and 14 cases of packaged water bottles to TUC at DMC Community Quarantine Center.

A Self Cleaning Service of the male quarter was done on 23 May 2020.

Disinfectants sprayed around the DMC campus by the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) staffs on 23 May 2020.

Keisham Sanatomba of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai and his family donated Rs.11,000 on 08 June 2020.

Laishram Gandhi, Councillor IMC Ward no. 4 ( Uripok A/C) and Raju of Thangal Bazaar donated Rs. 2000 and 200 face masks on 08 June 2020.

Sania Monlen Hijam of Thangmeiband Polem Leikai, an inmate of DMC CQC, donated Rs. 1000 as an appreciation on 15 June 2020.

Here are some glimpses of community volunteered activities or services done by various organizations and individuals in Imphal West district up to 26 June 2020.

Thangmeiband United Club (TUC): This club comprising of 22 Clubs, all belonging to Thangmeiband, made a lot of efforts for the welfare of the inmates at the DMC Community Quarantine Centre.

Relief materials (oil, onions and soap) donated by Salam Santosh, ex-President of Thangmeiband United Youth Club were distributed to the residents of Khomdrom Selungba Leikai on 26 April 2020.

Thangmeiband United Youth Club Volunteers (TUYC) together with the officials of DC, Imphal West distributed rice to Non-Manipuri migrant workers and daily wage workers on 29 April 2020.

Manipur College Community Quarantine Centre, Singjamei

At Manipur College Community Quarantine Center, various clubs, Meira Paibis, young volunteers, local residents of Singjamei donated food items, funds and conducted social service.

Here are some of the activities conducted by various organisations.

Yumnam Leikai Leishabising (young girls) Thanbal organizer, Chingamakhong Meira Paibi Chirom Leikai Meira Paibi donated relief fund to CQC (Manipur College) on 15 June 2020.

Multiple volunteers from Singjamei donated 1000 masks, 60 packages of packaged water bottles to QMC (Quarantine Management Committee) of Manipur College CQC on 31 May 2020.

Chingamakha Apungba Meira Paibi and Model Club Chingamakha together organised social service involving cleaning of Manipur College CQC areas on 31 May 2020.
